Conclusions

Questions answered,
not just positions.

We turn AIS reports into plain answers about calls, ports and trade. Each answer names its source and says what AIS cannot show.

AIS call timeline

"How long did she wait and when was she all fast?"

A printable report of one call: anchored, under way, pilot boat alongside, all fast and departure. Each moment has its time, place, source and confidence. Gaps in reception are listed plainly.

Per report · 8,000 credits · paid plans
Terminals and stays

"Which terminals are busy and how long do vessels stay?"

A port's terminals by name: vessels alongside now, occupancy, arrivals a week and time alongside.

Per port · 5 credits
Port congestion index

"Is this port busier than its normal?"

0 to 100 against the port's own normal, where 50 is normal. Given once we have heard the port long enough to know its normal.

Per port · 5 credits
Port waiting report

"How long did vessels wait before berthing last month?"

One port over a calendar month, or 7 to 31 days: how many vessels waited at anchor, the median and average wait, the share that berthed straight away, by vessel type and size, day by day against the port's normal and the busiest anchorages. For pricing a voyage and for demurrage questions.

Per report · 8,000 credits · paid plans
Cargo estimate

"About how much did she load or discharge?"

From the change in her reported draught, with a likely range. An estimate, not a cargo figure.

Per call · 1 credit
Bunker deliveries

"Which barge lay alongside her and for how long?"

Inferred from positions: the barge, the place, the time and how long, each with a confidence. Quantities are not known from AIS.

Per port · 5 credits
Canal and strait transits

"How many vessels went through the Dover Strait?"

Daily transits through canals and straits such as the Dover Strait, the Øresund and the Kiel Canal, by direction and vessel type. Days we did not hear a gate are marked, never counted as zero.

Per gate · 5 credits
Vessel employment

"Where has she been trading?"

Hours at sea, at anchor and alongside, miles steamed, the ports she called and the regions she traded between.

Per vessel · 5 credits
Example report

Each call,
line by line.

One call, from the AIS reports. Each moment gives the time of the report, the bracket the real moment lies in, the place by name, the source and a confidence. It closes plainly: generated automatically from AIS reports, not reviewed by a person, not a finding and not an expert opinion. NOR, laytime and demurrage are for the parties to count.

  • Anchored, under way, pilot boat alongside, all fast and departure
  • Waiting time, time at anchor and time alongside
  • Gaps in reception, listed with their length
  • A cargo estimate from her draught, with a likely range

The vessel in this example is made up. The places are real Rotterdam names.

Vessel search

Find a vessel by name or MMSI.

Search as you type. Her position comes from sources we may pass on, in certain areas, which a free account shows: today Norway, parts of the Baltic and our own stations' areas. Elsewhere you get her particulars with the position withheld.

  • Name or MMSI prefix
  • Particulars and destination for vessels we know
  • Port calls by vessel wherever we hear, tracks in the areas on the Coverage page

Event stream

Plug port events straight into your systems.

Arrivals, departures, anchoring and approaches as they are detected, ready for alerts, dashboards and operations.

  • Port events wherever we hear, or only in your area
  • Vessel name and port when known and the time of each event, with the position where its source lets us pass it on
  • On Pro and up, a WebSocket stream of positions in the areas on the Coverage page

Who is behind it

Built by
a marine surveyor.

Gangway AIS is built and run by Motto Marine International, a marine survey and consultancy company. It was built by a marine surveyor so it answers the questions asked in port: who is waiting, for how long, where she lay and when she sailed. The figures and reports are produced automatically from AIS data.

FAQ

What people ask us.

Can I get vessel positions through the API?

In certain areas, which a free account shows: today Norway, parts of the Baltic and our own stations' areas. Positions, tracks and the live stream through the API come only from sources we may pass on. Port calls, arrivals and waiting times come wherever we hear vessels and name the terminal or anchorage instead of giving a position. The live map shows more and is free to look at.

Where does the data come from?

Official coastal AIS services, partner receiver networks and our own stations. Each answer names its source and carries the credit its licence asks for. The full list is in the docs.

How fresh is it?

Live on paid plans. Reports arrive within seconds to a few minutes. Port events are detected as they happen; waiting times are recomputed every hour.

What is a credit?

A credit is how we count what an answer returns: 1 for a vessel, a port call or an event, 5 for a port's waiting times and 8,000 for an AIS call timeline. Full reports through the API are on paid plans. A free account sees a free preview of each report and can buy single reports. A request that finds nothing, or fails, is not counted, except a sanctions check: a clean result is the answer.

Can I use the data commercially?

Yes, within each source's licence. Each response carries the attribution to keep when you publish.

Which formats do you support?

JSON and GeoJSON, CSV and GPX where our sources allow it and, on Pro and up, a WebSocket stream of positions in the areas on the Coverage page.

Do you have satellite AIS?

On request. Gangway AIS is built on shore receivers and official coastal networks; one official network adds reports from its own national satellites. Vessels far offshore appear when a receiver hears them again.

Can I feed my own receiver?

Yes. One line in your receiver's settings sends its data to Gangway AIS and your station gets its own page and coverage map.

Is it for navigation?

No. AIS data can be late, missing or wrong. Never use it for navigation, collision avoidance or safety-of-life decisions.
